Meal Kit Review: Diet-to-Go

Overview

The Good

The Bad

The Facts

How Does It Work?

You pick a plan and specify how many meals you want Diet-to-Go to deliver to you per week. Those on the keto diet will want the Keto-Carb30 plan.

Diet-to-Go then delivers the meals via FedEx in an insulated container with plenty of ice packs. In a few large cities, you can pick your meals up fresh from a Diet-to-Go distribution center.

Each meal comes in an individual package like the one shown below:

When you receive your meals, you can refrigerate them for up to one week or freeze them for up to 30 days. When you're ready to eat one of the meals, heat it up in the microwave according to the instructions on the package.

Pricing

Diet-to-Go's meals vary from ~$10-$14/meal, depending on how many meals you order per week.

The most economical plan is to get three meals per day, seven days per week, which costs $9.74/meal. If you want fewer meals, you can switch to a plan that offers only lunch and dinner or a plan that covers only five days per week, but you'll pay a little more per meal.

My Meals

Diet-to-Go kindle provided Is It Keto with a sample box for the purposes of reviewing their offering, so I ate Diet-to-Go meals for about three days.

Visually, the meals were not so appealing. Though, to be fair, it's hard to score points for presentation when the meals all have to be frozen and shipped across the country.

Tastewise, most of the meals were fairly bland. Normally, I don't mind eating frozen meats or vegetables, but I found myself disappointed in these meals. They were more bland than a typically frozen meal you'd buy at the supermarket.

The Veggie Pizza with Green and Wax Beans stood out as a particularly tasty meal that reheated well. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was another of my favorites.

Nutrition

Here's an example day of eating Diet-to-Go's meals:

Meal Name Calories Fat Protein Net Carbs
Breakfast Scrambled Eggs with Turkey Sausage 280 17 g 25 g 5 g
Lunch Chicken Fajitas, Broccoli Puree, Roasted Brussels Sprouts 380 16 g 43 g 9 g
Dinner Chicken Cordon Bleu, Cheddar Cauliflower Mash, Sauteed Swiss Chard 480 27 g 41 g 9 g
Total   1,140 60 g 109 g 23 g

The macronutrients aren't too bad until you realize that the entire day of meals provides only 1,140 calories. This is far lower than typical daily calorie targets for healthy adults (1,600 to 2,400 for women, 2,000 to 3,000 for men).

The nutritional facts and ingredients for some of the meals were surprising. For example, take a look at the nutrition label for Scrambled Eggs with Turkey Sausage:

Some observations:

Summary

While Diet-to-Go offers a convenient meal service, we don't feel that it's appropriate for most people following a keto diet. The meals do not contain enough calories to sustain a healthy adult, and the carb content is too high for most people to maintain ketosis.

This meal prep service might work for you if you can maintain ketosis even when eating 30-50 g of net carbs per day and you enjoy the convenience of prepared, microwaveable meals. You'd likely need to supplement it with other meals to reach your normal caloric intake for the day.
